GETTING STARTED/WHAT TO EXPECT

We are offering you a free week to get started with us. This free week trial is designed to help you take the first step towards your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey or MMA with us. Everyone that is willing to become a member at Mastermind MMA Academy, are welcome to come and try a class regardless of their experience level. Want to simply watch? Feel free to come in during one of our classes to watch the class, meet the professors, and ask some questions before ever getting on the mats. While there, we encourage you to speak with others and get their opinions about our programs. We are a family-owned and operated academy so don't be surprised if we make you feel right at home on your first visit!

How it works:  After you signed up for a free week, Come on in for your free trial class during evening classes on Monday through Friday.

What to Expect:

  • Arrival - Please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled class time.

  • Safety - You will be asked to sign a waiver upon your arrival and introduced to the instructor.

  • Class- You will participate in a 60-min Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class starts with warm-ups, to follow are drills about the technique of the day. Don’t worry if you don’t get the exercises correct at first; no one does on their first day, and they take a little practice.

  • Live Rolling - Depending on your level of experience, the Professor may instruct you to simply watch this part of class until he feels you are ready to participate.

  • Questions- After class, you will meet with our program director and she will answer any questions you may have, as well as explain in detail which program will best fit your needs, schedule classes and price.

What to Wear Comfortable T-shirts, board shorts and sweat pants are fine. You can wear a gi or uniform from another martial art. Do NOT wear anything with extra pockets, belt loops or baggy fabric. Please “NO ZIPPERS” or "BUTTONS". These are dangerous since fingers and toes can get caught in them, hair and skin. Do not wear any jewelry. Flip flops or sandals are recommended so that you can easily slip them off before getting on the mats and please wear using the restrooms.

Hygiene Make sure your finger and toenails are well-groomed. If you have long hair, you’ll want to put it up in a ponytail or bun during class. You should also remove any piercings to prevent injuries.

Basic Rules - (Jiu-Jitsu)
No striking, punching or kicking.

    • No eye gouging or hair pulling.

    • No twisting or grabbing fingers.

    • No slamming (picking someone up and dropping them).

Remember that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is designed to be trained safely without serious injury. These rules are meant to help keep you and your training partners safe and healthy.

TAPPING: The normal way you signal submission in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is to tap your opponent three times. When you tap, make sure you do it hard enough that your partner can feel it; or tap yourself or the mat where they can see and/or hear it; or verbally tap by saying ” Tap! “; or loudly tap the mat with your foot so they can hear it.

Likewise, be aware of your training partner tapping and stop whatever you are doing when he does so.

Tapping is just part of training and there is no shame in it. Don’t worry about winning or losing. Just try the techniques you’ve learned to the best of your ability and tap when you need to, ideally before it hurts.

Whether you decide to become a member at Mastermind MMA Academy or not, we want to make sure that you choose a school that has a proven record to help you reach your goals. A school that will help you become better in all areas of your life. With that being said, we can't wait to have you come by and feel for yourself the atmosphere of our school and everything else we have to offer.
